Book 1 Project: Th1rteen R3asons Why Tour
My Idea:
My idea is to create a tour of the town called Crestmont where Hannah Baker lived in the book Thirteen Reasons Why. It would be similar to something like the tour they have for the places in the book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . You would have a guide that would explain to you which location was which from the book and they would describe what happened at that certain spot. Also there would be recordings of the corresponding tapes that you could listen to throughout the tour of the town, so that you could have a similar experience to what Clay had in the book. Another thing that would be included in the tour would be certain dates where the author, Jay Asher, would have question and answer sessions at certain locations so that fans could ask questions and be able to meet him.
Explanation:
I got my idea from the front of the book; there was a map inside the cover that showed where the different locations on the tapes were. One of the main points in the book was the map that Clay followed and the places where he was told on the tapes, so creating a tour can help bring some of the story to life. It helps you see partially of what Clay saw and also Hannah and everyone else that was included in those tapes. Being able to go to "The first red star. Hannah's old house." Or seeing where Hannah and Courtney "got to know Alex at Monet's." Also, "How about Rosie's? You know for ice cream," when Hannah and Marcus went on their disastrous so called date. Some of the biggest events in the book happened at these places so I thought including them in a tour would be really interesting. You could physically hold the map that Clay, and Courtney and Marcus and Ryan and everyone else on the tapes did and listen to Hannah's voice while seeing and visiting the actual places. You could have a hot chocolate at Monet's like Hannah always did and find the picture of Hannah and Courtney at a party in a scribble book on the shelf at Monet's. The map would look exactly like the one in the front of the book with the red stars marking the each point and the little notes about what happened where. Directions would be included on the back with the streets to take to each place. Every time you would arrive at the next star there would be the next tape for you to listen to just like the thirteen kids did in the story.
Why I think it will work:
I know that you are probably thinking, who would ever want to go on a tour to see the places that a young girl named in tapes that she sent out to people before committing suicide, that seems a bit messed up. But hear me out. Having something like this could help someone know what to do differently if they or someone they know is in a similar situation. It may help them gather up the courage to reach out to someone when they need help. It could help people become more aware of things like suicide and how to prevent it from even happening in the first place. Another thing about creating the tour is that when there is advertising for the tour more people will hear about the book and become interested. Or they may even go on the tour and then decide to read the book because they were intrigued or wanted to know the full story.
Here is what the map looks like from the front of the book:

What is a book?
A book is your own world. You can imagine it any way you want. Books are like a blank canvas everyone interprets them and pictures them differently. Someone might view one book as being sad and depressing and another person may view it as encouraging or inspiring. You yourself create the characters in your head you have a specific vision of them that no one else has, no movie or pictures will truly show what you envisioned but that’s okay. It’s supposed to be like that with books. Your own world is your own world. That’s the great thing about books they appear to just be words on pages when really they are so much more. They are the escape when you have a bad day or your favorite love story and even a tragedy that makes you sob every single time you read it. They have so much detail that you can perfectly picture what the author is trying to show you. I love how when you reread a book you can catch little things that you didn’t the first time or understand a part better. A book is limitless. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to books. One author may write something one way and a reader might take it another way and that’s okay that’s the whole point. You have the freedom to do that with books so why not? Pick a book get comfortable and start reading and get lost in your own world.
Why I Read
I read for pleasure. It's something that relaxes me, and helps me forget
everything around me even if only for a short while. I love getting lost in a
good book. Putting yourself in a characters shoes and thinking about what they
might be like if you met them. How they would look or talk or even walk. Reading
helps me create stories of my own in my head that I otherwise couldn't with
movies that have everything already laid out in front of you. I get to put my
own spin on things and think about a different way to write a piece. Reading has
no limits or boundaries it's just you, your imagination and the pages in front
of you and you can do whatever you please with it. It allows you to create your
own little world that you can get lost in for an hour or two. I read to learn
people's stories and to hear about new places that I've never been
